Author Interview! Kathy Nickerson
Welcome to the new media, in which authors reject the tired, old methods of yesterday - like Oprah and Good Morning America, and instead conduct interviews and guest posts in a Blogs-Across-America kind of tour, designed to help as many readers as possible become aware that Thirty Days to Glory by Kathy Nickerson releases THIS WEEK.
Thirty Days to Glory is Christmasy and funny and wonderful and you can get it on Amazon and at any event where Kathy Nickerson appears. It is the story of Catherine Benson, an elderly widow who wants to do one great thing before the end of her life, and Elmer Grigsby, a WWII vet who wants to stay seriously drunk until the end of his. One December, the two lives intersect, from which tears, laughter, and a whopping dose of destiny ensues.
As my contribution to the world-wide tour, I present, my interview with Author Kathy Nickerson.
Q: I happen to know your attitude is to embrace every season of life. How do you DO that?
A: I think it is a daily decision, and I learned it from my mother. When your toddler becomes a teenager, you make a decision not to mourn for the little boy. Instead, you cheer in the stands while he makes a touchdown and marvel at the young man he is becoming. You still treasure the little boy. You just decide not to yearn for him. You keep making those decision at every stage. Then, one day you wake up and it is Christmas morning. You are alone with the man you married forty years ago, your children are miles away, and the house is silent. Then you expect Jimmy Stewart to walk in the door with snow on his head because you suddenly realize you are living a Wonderful Life.
Q: Your book features a group of friends called the Glory Circle Sisters. Who are your Glory Circle Sisters?
A: Oh, so many! My real sister, Martha, of course. We've belonged to one another the longest. Being sisters in spirit and in flesh is such a gift. Then my friend, Judy. We learned to read together in the first grade and have been true friends ever since. We go ages without seeing one another and then pick up in the middle of a conversation. My friend Sherry, with whom I can pray down heaven or laugh until I can't breathe. If I kept naming all the tremendous women in my life, this would turn into a book series.
Q: What kind of women friends do you think I should I have right now?
A: I want you to have friends of faith who treasure the same things you do and who strengthen your life in God. And I want you to have friends who are searchers. They will stretch you with questions and will make you be honest with yourself as you examine what you believe. I want you to have friends who make you laugh, who let you cry, and who leave you feeling full of life when you have been together.
Q: In Thirty Days to Glory, Catherine's children worry about her living alone. Tell the truth, what do you want us to do with you when you're old?
A: Ha! Actually, I'm glad you asked because I do have specific instructions about that, and I want you to follow them to the letter: You do whatever the heck you want. Seriously, I plan to be like your two grandmothers, completely content even when my world shrinks down to the confines of my own rocking chair. And you can put that rocking chair anywhere in the world you want. I promise to embrace that season of life with grace, too. (You might want to save this to show me when I've lost my memory.)
Q: Okay, final question and the most important: Who's your favorite child?
A: Why, you are, of course. Just don't tell your siblings. And, if you want to avoid an identity crisis, don't read your sisters' blogs when they ask me the same question.
