I Want to be Known for This

In 2013, my baby had started first grade, my writing career had not become the suitable living of my dreams, and I was back in the real world of office culture.

I wasn’t thrilled.

That year, a satirical news site published an article about (the fictional) Fox Books filing bankruptcy. The article suggested Kathleen Kelly’s crowd couldn’t get it done with their plea of “one, two, three, four, we don’t want this superstore,” but Amazon and Apple finally squashed them.

One of us in the family shared it with the others. I said I wished my job was to write articles based on my favorite rom-coms and other delights, and my sister Charity said, “Well, do it anyway.”

What a brilliant idea. I realized what a gift it is to love doing a thing I don’t have to ask permission to do. It’s easy to forget this when I wish I could ONLY do the thing I love. I’m trying to remember it these days, though.

When I posted on Instagram that I planned to start blogging again, I paired it with Taylor Swift’s song “Daylight,” at the end of which she says, “I want to be known for the things I love..”

Me, too. In the spirit of both of these brilliant ideas, this blog is me writing what I want, when I want, and hoping to be known for the things I love.
