I call it the Vo Cab
Today I was thinking of writing a children's book about a kid whose parents keep saying they don't understand him. So he goes on a journey to pick up some more words in his Vo Cab. I thought of it not because I could actually execute it with any brilliance (any of you children's book writers are welcome to that one), but because Jake is TOTALLY doing that lately. I get the A Word A Day emails, and my increase is NOTHING compared to what he picks up every moment of the day. He's adding words like crazy right now. And repeating whole movie titles after only hearing them once (he used to call all movies by one word that described the movie but wasn't actually in the title - i.e., "Puppies" for 101 Dalmations, "Dinosaur" for Land Before Time). And singing theme songs and such around the house.
It thrills me right to my toes, all that vocabulary growth. It's just a matter of time before he responds to me someday with, "Oh, good sentence, Mama!" Like the children who say good job when their parents pee.
I went to his pre-school today. He's enrolled for the fall, and we had some paperwork to turn in. I got all excited for him that he'll be going to school. I was thinking how we need to buy him new squeaky shoes and that the little tables and chairs are so cute I could hardly stand it and that it will be such a wonderful place for all those new words!
Then I took him to a movie and I missed a whole bunch of scenes because I wanted to watch him watch it more than I wanted to see it myself. I kept asking him what he thought and if he was having fun just so I could hear him talk. The people in front of us really loved me for that. But I'm like, Dudes, he said "I'm ready go Ice Age Dawn Din-ors" today. That's the longest sentence EVER. You never know what's going to come out of that mouth, and I don't want to miss a THING.
