he's our worst sleeper. he's good at it.
A few nights ago Michael and I woke up to a thud and the beginning of a few minutes of very loud crying. Jake had climbed onto the top bunk (where John sleeps) in the middle of the night and then FELL OFF OF IT.
He's done this before. It's kind of a regular habit - the climbing up part. We tried to tell him to crawl in bed with Drew instead - he's on the bottom bunk. Jake nodded and said okay, but Drew just shook his head. "Nope," Drew said. "He just crawls right over me to get to the ladder."
Aside from the fact that I'm concerned Jake's cheek will get us turned in for child abuse, I'm disturbed by this. It doesn't exactly seem like something we can stop. So we asked John to come and get us now when Jake appears on the bunk. So last night he did. TWICE. The first time I walked in and found it completely precious that Jake was all curled up at the end of John's bunk like a little cat. He smiled at me so sweetly when I picked him up and returned him to his own bed. The SECOND time, I heard him going there (he was crawling and really loud about it - I'm thinking I was supposed to hear), and I caught him in the act. I grabbed at his arms about four times before I finally caught one and yanked him back over poor Drew (sure enough, Jake just walks right over Drew's sleeping body in this process). I flung him under my arm along with all three blankets, but apparently he had taken off his shirt. "Mom!" John whispered from his room. "You forgot his shirt."
"I DON'T CARE!" I "whispered" back. Then I hauled him down the hallway to our room and plopped him on a pallet on the floor. Again with the precious smile now, Jake? Like I didn't just yank you around because you've gotten me up TWICE IN ONE NIGHT. I tucked him all in with three blankets and our decorative pillows we put on the floor each night while we sleep. At least he can't fall off of there. He still looked precious in the morning, but when I had to get up while he slept it off all comfortable and summer-vacationy on MY floor, I had half a mind to walk over him on my way to the shower.
Lessons learned:
1. This is why I'm too tired to write a meaningful blog post today.
2. Jake doesn't care enough about my sleep.
3. Jake needs a new bed. With walls.
