Emmys
It had been a while since I'd seen the Emmys. Before Cable, CBS was our fuzziest channel. Like, so fuzzy that it would have been better to just remove it from the remote rotation, but I couldn't stand to do that because I wanted to at least know it was there. Also, being on a school night and all (for my children), I rarely went to anyone else's house to watch it. And if I did, I ended up not watching all that closely because we would visit or I would leave early and miss a bunch.
Last night I sat down and watched the whole thing beginning to end, and I was so happy because awards shows are the things I love the most. Call me Neil Patrick Harris in that sense--who was the host, in case you don't obsess over these things as I do--and who did such a good job (apparently) that people would TELL HIM SO when they came up to ACCEPT THEIR AWARDS. It was sort of weird. I don't remember that happening before and I wondered - is it because he lost in his category? Or because t.v. people have better togetherness than the snooty movie peeps? Which reminds me of my favorite part - Ricky Gervais. That guy has got to be the funniest man in entertainment right now. I can't wait to see The Invention of Lying, and his joke about the Emmys being better than the Oscars because he's intimidated by the level of pretty in the Oscar room but feels, frankly, above average at the Emmys, was the funniest part of the night for me. Anyway, I love him, but I can't watch him without feeling really sad that he became an atheist because of the way his mom responded when his older brother expressed doubts about their faith. If I remember it right, rather than allow the conversation, she seemed scared that asking questions would inevitably lead to unbelief. Gervais also lost faith in God first and in Santa Claus second. The whole thing sort of breaks my heart.
And, where was I? The Emmys? Yeah, well, it had been a while. And I was really excited to be there (on my couch, watching, I mean). And I sat straight up and rejoiced every time someone was funny or if they danced or if they sang. But on the whole, and I hesitate to admit this because of my sincere love for all things entertainment (well, not ALL things)...the show, actually, sort of bored me.
Don't panic! I'm sure I'll enjoy them more next year when I've had Cable for a year and at least recognize most of the shows from their commercials. This year all I could think was, which channel still plays a miniseries ever? What ARE half these shows? And is 30 Rock the only sitcom ON television anymore?
I think, perhaps, I've become a movie snob. I mean, don't even get me started on the segment devoted to Reality T.V. in which I was thinking, These people get time on an awards show for losing their cool every week? It's really unfair. And totally unlike what I was thinking during the variety section. Which was more like, I'd like more enormous musical numbers by Justin Timberlake and Hugh Jackman, please.
In summary, I want a show where movie people sit in the audience, Neil Patrick Harris hosts, Ricky Gervais speaks, Justin Timberlake sings, and as many people as possible dance, dance, dance, dance, dance. The only Reality people I'd allow, are the hosts.
